David Heringer wasn’t sure about Tom and his methods. So he decided to put them to the test.
The Tom Jackson Team became aware of David’s video blog series through Facebook. We were so intrigued by his idea to test Tom’s Live Music Method (and his willingness to learn in the public eye!), that we decided to follow his journey.
After watching the Live Music Method & 7 Deadly Sins 3-DVD set, David went searching for more ways to learn from Tom. He found the All Roads Lead to Stage DVDs and hatched a plan to share his experience with the world and put Tom’s Live Music Method to the test.
What amazed me the most when I first watched this video was that David understood the importance of building the live show. What many in the industry would call “backwards”, David is starting with what he wants to communicate from the stage, imagining how he wants his audience to feel and is putting the time into his live show. He isn’t stuck in what his show has to be and is open to what his show can be. Watch the video…
Did you notice that David asked, “…what does this show need to sound like?… and what do those moments need to look like?”.
After watching four of Tom’s DVDs, David is beginning to understand what many artists are having a hard time grasping: a live show is both musical and visual.
From thinking about what media to use, to what his songs will sound like and from how the audience will feel to how the lighting can affect that, David is opening himself to what his live show can be.
He is even starting to envision how he will feel onstage when he is embodying Tom’s Live Music Method.
Many artists don’t focus on their live show until they suddenly have a live show “opportunity!” We commend David for realizing he needs to get a vision for the kind of show he’d like to bring his audience before the opportunity arrives.
While you may not share his vision for a sci-fi, zombie-infused concept show, it is important to note his determination to make it happen. And because he understands that it’s a process, David ends the video planning to study, woodshed and update us on his progress.
I look forward to seeing his progress and sharing his journey with you over the next few weeks!
