I just finished working with a band I have never worked with before. One of the guys in the band (big surprise!!) is afraid to take risks in rehearsal.
This re-e-e-a-a-ally slows down the creative process and the ability to create moments! Taking risks is absolutely necessary to consistently create moments, both in rehearsal and onstage.
Here’s an article about taking risks from Seth Godin that I recently read..I couldn’t agree more! Let me know your thoughts, too: Apparent Risk and Actual Risk – read more…
I love risk, but at some things I hate it. This article was really hands on for me. I am afraid of taking risk when I rehearse (live at a campground, and is afraid other people will get annoied with my rehearsing).
I quote a part of the article that is especially true to performers:
“Apparent risk is avoiding the chance that people will laugh at you and instead backing yourself into the very real possibility that you’re going to become obsolete or irrelevant.”
No rehearsal, no risk, no accomplishment…
I love Seth Godin and I agree with you, Tom. “Taking risks is absolutely necessary to consistently create moments…” Very well put.
