It’s the Stupid Economy

“How do we sell more tickets to our concerts? With the economy the way it is, people don’t seem to want to spend any money!”

Are you having this problem, too?

Yes, the economy can play a role in how people choose to spend their money. But did you know that a recession can actually boost the entertainment and music industry? Folks are seeking an escape.

A USA Today article stated that live concerts held steady in 2009 and attendance rose slightly! The article said “people are willing to open their wallets for artists on their must-see lists.”

This tells me that if an artist puts on a great show, people will make a way to come see you and skimp somewhere else in their budget!

Video your shows and watch them objectively as “Joe Audience.” Ask yourself: is this band fun to watch? Do they make me a part of the show? Are there great moments that draw me in and make an emotional connection? Is this a “must-see” band, or is it just more of the same?

If your show is really great and you’re connecting with the audience, it will be revealed at your merch table. You might even be able to take a hit on the ticket price to get people in the door, because once they see you and love you, they want to buy your music. They’ll want something to remind them of you. They’ll want to experience those moments – the way you made them feel – again!

But, your show has to be great. If people have a great experience, they will want to come back and will bring their friends next time.

I’d love to help you create moments with either some one-on-one rehearsals or with a video critique. Let me know what I can do!
