I experienced a stunning amount of music at the WOMAD Festival (pictured), in clubs, at my workshop and at the Fringe Festival. There were artists of all types: from one guy with a guitar to a group of twelve people on stage and musical styles from around the world including rock, pop, electronica, blues and many other genres.
When it came to performing, I was particularly struck by the similarities between the artists. Some were in front of twenty people and some were in front of ten thousand people. The one thing I noticed about all of them was how they wanted the audience to respond in certain ways, but the artists didn’t know how to get the response they wanted. They were sending out confusing non-verbal signals/musical cues to the audience so they didn’t get the response they were hoping for.
