One In a Million: Charles Walker Band

Charles Walker BandTheir fusion of sounds — funk, pop, R&B, Motown — into a unique, soulful feel, makes the Charles Walker Band one in a million!

Though compared to an array of musicians (Prince, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, James Brown), their music retains deep gospel influences and positive lyrical messages.

Charles Walker, on sax and keys, was influenced by artists like Luther Allison, Stevie Wonder, and Prince. He has synthesized those influences while contributing his own ever-growing musical and personal maturity into the CWB sound. Walker says of “Ghetto Prophet,” their latest release on Ehlona Records, “‘I stretched and struggled to depart further into funk, pop and Motown, remembering it’s 2014.”

Porsche Carmon is strong on lead vocals. And Luther Tate on bass and Demetris Vance on drums lay down a steady groove.

Their song “One in a Million” tells a story they know can happen: that of the child who grows up impoverished and becomes something great:

As a testament to their live performance intensity, Charles Walker Band has opened for national acts including Earth Wind & Fire, Aaron Neville, BB King, Booker T, and Cameo.

They have been featured on Fox News, NBC “Live in the Morning,” nationally syndicated “Discover Wisconsin,” and were the featured artist on the Blues Revue (2010) and Soul Bag (2007) sampler CDs.  They were nominated 3 years for Wisconsin’s best WAMI Soul/R&B Act, and won the award in 2013.

Watch & listen to the energy and excitement they bring in this video of their original song, Soul Deep:

“Tom’s teaching has helped so much,” says Walker. “We opened for Taj Mahal at Summerfest in Milwaukee last year and received a standing ovation!”

He goes on to give the reason he believes this is happening for the band. “We have learned to think about the endings to our songs, and rearranging them so we can get the audience to better hear what we are doing and crack open moments.”

They tell us that all this, plus learning how to use movement on stage, causes people to come up to their band after a show and say, “You guys don’t play music, you give an experience!”

The band is currently working on their 9th CD, “Wonderland,” and they are headed out for their 3rd East Coast Tour this year in December. If you’d like to catch this “one in a million” band live, check out their upcoming dates here…
