Mark Cuban (Shark Tank, Dallas Mavericks) says: “When you’ve got 10,000 people trying to do the same thing, why would you want to be number 10,001?”
Right now there are (at least) 10,000 bands and singers out there doing the same, dull live set of songs… just standing or sitting there, playing songs.
And there are people watching those artists, seeing nothing, experiencing nothing, feeling nothing… leaving the show, never to return. And these artists will blindly say, “Well, that audience just doesn’t get me.” When they are told they need to work on their show to draw their audience in, they’ll respond, “I want to look natural,” or “I just want to be spontaneous on stage.”
Many artists have the misconception that working with us will make them ‘cookie cutter,’ when in fact, what we do will bring out the uniqueness in each artist. Without learning how to communicate and engage an audience, they will be number 10,001. With our help they can be ‘the only one’ – the one audiences will remember!
Yes, we have lots of tools and skills that we teach all our artists. But how they are applied, combined with your unique songs, personality, genre, band members, etc., will make your show unique.
I recently worked with a female pop/rock artist, and started with the same tools and skills I used with a female country artist. But their shows look and feel very different because their music, the personality of these women, and the vision for their shows are different.
Beyond the basics that every artist needs to work on, we work on song arrangement changes to create moments, add some unique elements to each show, and draw out their individual onstage persona. All this adds up to a one-of-a kind show for each artist.
So, if you want to be #10,001, keep doing what 10,000 others are doing and just blend in. If you want to be memorable, learn how to make your gig stand out, the most immediate way to see a big change in your performance is to hire a Live Music Producer one-on-one. We’ll come to you, or you can come to Nashville.
By the way, Mark Cuban also says “Everyone has got the will to win; it’s only those with the will to prepare that do win.”
‘Play Misty for Me’! Old movie….:) Love that you’re striving to make your show unique David! Do you have some videos on YouTube? Is that you in the red hat playing 2 keyboards?
I totally agree. I look for ways to make what I do unique. Comments I get include, “best show we’ve seen”. I am the only one who does a show using 3 pianos with both instrumental and vocal numbers. Yesterday, I sang “Misty” and a woman in her late 30s had tears rolling down her eyes.
