7 Deadly Sins: A list for success
Years ago, I put together what I call the “7 Deadly Sins of an Artist.” While it may sound like a lot of negative doom and gloom, you need to understand that I see this list as a good reality check when it comes to making sure you are a success with your music.
So much of an artist’s success is wrapped up in the live show; and yet most artists think of the live show last (if at all) as a place to invest their time, energy, and money. Many artists see the “hit song,” the “contest win,” and the “viral video” as places to expend their energy. They pursue recordings, music videos, and photo shoots, throwing their money into those. And their time is spent trying to “meet the right people” who will give them their big break.
None of these things are wrong when put into proper order and perspective. But as artists, we want the quick win — and the quick win isn’t always the best. Some of my favorite lyrics are in a song from the movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon: “Do few things but do them well. Heartfelt work goes purely. If you want your dreams to be, take your time, go slowly.”
