Make a Connection, Share Your Life: Rev K in the Spotlight

Rev K, singer/songwriter from Wetaskiwin Alberta, plays a mixture of folk, country, and blues. A solo act, he plays guitars, harmonica, and sings with a style of his own.

His love is to share his music with others. But in sharing his music, he’s actually sharing pieces of his own life. In his own words, Kerry Klontz (aka Rev K) says, “The songs I write come to me spontaneously, often when I am not even thinking of writing a song. They usually have something to do with what is going on for me personally… Getting to know my songs is like reading a map of my life.”

Even though the stories behind his songs often have hidden meanings or are connected to stories that others may not see in the same way, Rev K says he “loves the connection that is made with other people” through his music.

A recent release of 3 of his songs on a USB Wafer Card entitled On Track includes You Stir Me Up, Sally’s Well, and the following blues song Sugar Train:

To bring his live show to the next level, Rev K recently attended a Tom Jackson Roadshow Bootcamp. The training he received there has begun to make a difference already.

“I played a 3 hour gig at a restaurant and used Tom’s teaching to put together 3 sets for my show,” says Rev K. “I was able to create special moments for the guests and we had a great time.”

Rev K says his thinking has changed in several ways since Bootcamp. For one thing, he always considered himself a good songwriter but lacking in musical technique. This created a lot of pressure to play everything perfectly, and he tended to focus on his mistakes in spite of people’s compliments. “Now my focus is on creating moments,” says Rev K, “and that is something I am good at, so this has tremendously boosted my confidence. I can move forward to the next level and I am ready to pursue more far reaching opportunities to share my music.”

Also, being a songwriter who wants to share his music, Rev K often tried to squeeze 15 songs into a 1-hour set. After Bootcamp he began to realize it’s not about getting through songs, but connecting with people. Rev K says his mission statement is “To share my music with the world and connect with people to inspire them, bring them joy and give them hope.” His focus has switched from himself and how well he plays, to what he can give to other people. “They won’t remember my mistakes or may not even remember the songs, but they will remember me if I am able to touch them in a meaningful way.”

Here’s a look at Rev K’s latest accomplishment, a recently produced video of Sugar Train:

From coffee house settings and theaters to community events and fundraisers, Rev K considers himself a part of the music community in the Wetaskiwin area. He’d love to share his stories and songs with you, too. Check out his website and upcoming events to make a connection with our Backstage Artist friend, Rev K!
