A big congratulations to 12- year-old singer/songwriter Sydney Mae from Alberta Canada, winner of the Ponoka Stampede 2013 Talent Show!
With 12 artists vying for top position, Sydney knew she needed to bring her best to the stage. Musically she had a great song (“Mama’s Broken Heart”), an incredible voice that belies her age (Sydney was the youngest artist competing), and Gord Bamford’s band for backup.
But her manager Lyle Priel, gave us insight on what helped Sydney with her live performance. He wrote to Tom Jackson’s associate Amy Wolter a few days after Amy taught a Road Show Bootcamp in Wetaskiwin, AB – an event Sydney had attended to learn more about performance and engaging an audience.
“Thank you so much for your help with her,” Lyle said. “We all know that it’s because of your Bootcamp – it gave her the edge she needed.”
The Ponoka News confirmed the edge Sydney had with her live performance: “Sydney Mae… changed the entire trajectory of the competition with her commanding stage presence and perfect rendition of Mama’s Broken Heart by Miranda Lambert.”
Amy Wolter says it isn’t a surprise Sydney won the competition. “I had fun working with Sydney Mae at our Bootcamp. She’s got the talent and shows loads of promise as an engaging live performer.”
As winner of the Ponoka Stampede Talent Show, Sydney Mae will receive a songwriting session with Duane Steele (“Anita Got Married”), and $500 cash toward a demo recording.
