The Audition: Show and Hide

Have you been watching The Voice? The X-Factor? Or one of the other myriad of shows that feature the 1-song audition?

As a singer, a musician, a band member, an artist of any kind, you will probably need to audition at least one time in your career. And that one time may be your one and only opportunity to capture the judges and your audience.

You may have a great voice, a great song; but if you’re not prepared correctly, you won’t get past the audition, or you won’t be able to impress those music industry people, or (worst case scenario) you’ll leave a bad impression at an important event or high profile public appearance!

What’s the best way to do your audition?

Well, it has to do with a “show” and “hide.” You need to show your strengths, and you need to hide the things that aren’t your strengths.

Here’s a brief video overview of what you need to keep in mind when you’ve got only one song:

There is a method to doing this. For one thing, whether you are doing an audition for your school, a showcase for music industry people, or a special presentation for the Grammys, it’s important to not be thinking onstage!

You need to be comfortable and confident. Otherwise, we the judges (or the audience) are distracted from your main purpose: to emotionally connect with people. A distraction means no connection with anyone – judges or audience.

Learning the best way to really shine in your audition is a process. To be completely prepared, check out my All Roads Lead to the Stage DVDs, especially Show Me the Show.

Being comfortable onstage gives you a power most artists don’t have, and that power is the confidence that comes through sufficient preparation!

  1. Would you believe, this came in on the very day that I was to audition to sing the National Anthem for athletic events? Although I’d auditioned successfully last year, I still took what I read that had come in from Tom that morning seriously and determined that I was going to go out there and have fun and be relaxed. And, that’s just what I did. And, I got the call that I’m on the list again this year! (Thought the timing of the message from Tom was pretty incredible! Guess I needed it, too!)

  2. Thanks for the reminder that it’s not about me and how I feel, but, about touching people’s hearts to benefit them.
