What Do Publishers REALLY Want?
I cannot tell you how many times I have been in the process of speaking about solid song structure information and in the middle of my delivery a hand goes up. Then some well meaning songwriter, usually a newbie, says, “Well, what about Bob Dylan’s song ______, or Pink’s song _______, Dianne Warren’s songs ______? They didn’t have THAT in their song!”
Honestly, this sounds harsh but I would really like to just go up and shake them. But, I don’t.
My reply is usually something like, “Well, are you Bob Dylan, Pink or Dianne Warren? Do you have their respect or fan base?” When you get to that place in the industry, those guys have much less to prove than a new (unknown, not yet successful) songwriter.
