My Labor of Love

Many of you know I’m writing a book right now (in fact, I’m getting close to being done with the actual writing part of it!).

I knew it would give me a chance to put my concepts and principles on paper. But I had no idea how much it would energize me and give me such clarity into what I do!

I’m really excited about it! It’s my second labor of love.

Let me explain. I just taught at two events: one was up in Canada at the Vancouver Island Music Business Conference, and the other was Indie Ignite here in Nashville.

Typically when I teach at conferences, I get an hour or so (maybe a little more) to give an overview of my Live Music Methods. I might put an artist onstage and show a few concepts hands-on.

But there’s never nearly enough time to go into much depth! I always sense there’s a part of the audience who hears and sees me teach and thinks they’ve learned all they need to. But I know they haven’t – we’ve just scratched the surface!

My 1st Labor of Love

That’s why I had made the decision to record one of my 4-day events in Nashville a few years ago… that was my first labor of love. I spent over $100,000 and four years to get it right, because I wanted to give artists the opportunity to hear more of my Live Music Methods. I thought it was important to go into detail about how to capture and engage your audience, create moments, and change lives.

And that’s where my All Roads Lead to the Stage 7-DVD set came from. It’s 12 hours of teaching in 17 sessions… and I’m really happy with the way it turned out. We’ve had thousands of people comment on how it’s helped them. And I know it will continue to help artists for years to come, because these onstage concepts will never become obsolete.

My 2nd Labor of Love

But I realize now – putting the teaching on DVDs is a completely different kind of teaching than I can do in a book. Even 17 classes wasn’t enough time to go into depth and explore all the possibilities the same way I can in a book!

Putting my teaching into written form helps me develop themes and concepts that I haven’t been able to go into before. It helps me explain in depth, give you multiple illustrations, and fill in the gaps to give the information my conference and workshop sessions don’t allow me to finish because of time constraints.

At conference and workshop sessions, you can see hands-on examples to improve your show. But with a book, when I do edits I can say “hey, I know what else needs to go there…”

In a book, I’ve got the chance to tell you true stories about artists I’ve known or worked with to help you see what you can achieve (or sometimes to show you what you probably shouldn’t be doing!).

Having a chance to write, rewrite, edit, and write more, feels a little like the rehearsal process. I had the vision to write this book, I pulled together all the material I needed to use to put it together, and I got into the writing room (my “rehearsal” room).

I’ve been able to take some risks, follow some bunny trails, and come up with what I think will be a capturing and engaging book, full of moments, and maybe it’ll even change a few lives. At least that’s what I’m wanting it to be!

Last time I wrote a blog about my book (“I Think I’ll Write a Book“), more than 40 of you commented on what you’d like to see me include. I’ll be looking through those comments before I finish writing, so keep the comments coming below, and let me know what you’d like to read about!

  1. Hi Tom,
I look forward to your book. We have the DVD series and have put what you teach into practice. We recently had an opportunity to do a mini concert based on what we’ve learned that resulted in two standing ovations. So we’re lovin it and looking to dig in deeper.

    Cheers,
    Mike..

  2. I will buy that book in bulk quantities and give it as presents to all the musicians I know. At least 3 months after I absorb it though lol

  3. I think I’ll be the first to order it. It’ll probably still be warm from the press when I get it!

    Fun stuff.

    Ron McNeil

  4. Can’t wait to read it Tom!!! 😀

  5. Tom,

I am looking forward to the release of your book. It doesn’t seem that long ago that you announced that were going to write it. So, how much longer before it is released?

I’d love to have the time and money to be able to have our duo (me/wife) take a private session with you but the job that pays the bills only goes so far in the bill pay and way to far in the taking up of my time. 😉
We’ve had a couple of decent years and positive reactions and quite a bit of gigs. We play in the Austin TX area and despite what people may think, there are so many musicians here it’s almost impossible or at least very difficult to make your mark in the music world.

    Best Regards,

    Ken
