The Industry is More Than You Think
When you think of “the music industry,” what do you think of?
Ask the average non-musician, and they automatically think “the recording industry” – CDs, iTunes, American Idol, record labels, that sort of thing. Even mainstream news media uses the term “music industry” as synonymous with “recording industry.”
Ask the average musician, and the first things they usually mention are writing songs and getting record deals.
But I’ve often talked about the 3 parts of the music industry. And recently I noticed that Wikipedia agrees with me. In fact, here’s their opening sentence describing what the “music industry” is: “The music industry (or music business) sells compositions, recordings and performances of music.”
