In order to give Bootcamp artists the best learning experience, Tom decided to pull a guitar player out of the audience (thanks, Bret Welty!) to free up Herbie as a lead singer. This gives Herbie an opportunity to really show some confidence & authority, to become a commanding presence, and take control of the song. (Obviously, Herbie would need to woodshed and rehearse to make it look comfortable — but that’s a “given” with playing an instrument, singing, or performing, right?)
