USA Olympic athlete Erin Hamlin won a bronze medal in the luge. In an interview afterward, I saw her point out the mistakes she made as well as the things she did correctly.
I could easily see what she was talking about because she was showing us the video of her run.
Olympic athletes are constantly watching film with their coaches to try and improve their performance. Do you film your rehearsal or show and watch yourself, too?
But there’s a key difference in “watching film” and “watching film and knowing what to look for.” Have you noticed that a large percentage of athletes who win medals have coaches with a history of their athletes winning medals over the years?
I used to ask artists to video themselves, and when we’d watch it together, I’d hear them say things like “I should smile there,” “I should jump around there,” or “Dude, you should wear something different onstage!” They were majoring in the minors. The things they saw and wanted to change would make very little difference in their success onstage.
Olympic athletes understand you need to review what you’ve done by watching videos of your performance with a great coach.
Today’s concept for you: Videotape yourself, then know what you are looking for – or have a coach next to you who does! And the better the “coach,” the better the medal.
So much of what applies to creating a great live show is something a live music producer can help you with so you win onstage. You may not walk out with a gold medal, but you will get more bookings (because you are asked to come back), more money for playing live, and more income from your merch sales.
