Get Passionate: Help Children in Need

There are a couple things I’m passionate about when it comes to music. One is the live show: I want artists to understand how to make an emotional connection with their audience so they can create a great show, build their fan base, and make a living with their music.

The other thing might not seem to have anything to do with music – but it can. And it should! My other great passion is helping children in need.

As musicians and singers, we want our shows to change people. We introduce them to our thoughts and feelings when we write touching lyrics. We want them to laugh and sing with us when we’re playing something fun and entertaining. We hope they’ll become acquainted with new sounds, new melodies, new rhythms, when they come to our show.

But the change we make in their lives doesn’t have to stop there. If you are an artist who performs at least 25 shows a year, you may be eligible to change the lives of children around the world and with that, change the lives of your audience as well.

Years ago, I was part of a team who developed the “artist associate model” where an artist makes an appeal during their show for helping children in need. In return, the artist gets an honorarium for every child sponsored. This model became so successful for both the charity and the artists, it became the model for other charities to raise funds for their causes. In fact, raising funds through these artist associate programs (in most cases) is the most economical way to raise funds for the organization.

Over time, I’ve helped develop artist associate programs for other charitable organizations who work with international adoption, women’s issues, ending poverty, education, homelessness, spreading the Gospel, and more. And they are all looking for artists to help them!

There is a catch – it takes a certain kind of artist. Do you fit this model? The artists who have successfully worked with these charities have two things in common:

1) A passion for the work the charity is doing — They’ve taken the time to research and learn about the charity. They learn how the charity works, how their artist associate program works, and they sense and recognize how their involvement can make a difference in people’s lives and in the world.

2) They treat it as a business — They take it seriously enough to work on their appeal and give it a place in their show.

Can you get passionate about helping a child in need? Would you be willing to take the time to work on your appeal, give it a place in your show, and make it part of who you are?

I have dozens of stories I could tell you about artists this has worked for. I know indie artists who supplement their income with an additional $10-12K a year and help 100’s of children at the same time. I know bands who take their appeal on multi-city tours and help charities raise $30 million in support and earn an extra $1.5 million to help pay for their tour.

I’ve helped artists whose appeals are made in arenas, small churches, at festivals, in bars & clubs, and even at elementary schools! But again, it works for them because of those 2 things – passion and work.

What’s my part in this endeavor? Well, I help match artists with the charities. But I also help train the artists to make the best appeal possible. Check out this new video I just made, welcoming artists into our tour support program:

Be watching over the next few weeks, and you’ll see numerous videos added to our Backstage Video area to help artists with their charity appeal. If you are already an artist with a charity, you’ll want to access these – so let us know so we can give you that access.
