Play for Something Real

We all need reality checks at times. That’s one of the reasons I like working with charities and non-profit organizations. It gives me perspective in life.

You see, sometimes I find myself whining about my steak being overcooked, having to wait in line at airport security, or having to get up early for a morning meeting.

And then I watch the videos of a trip my wife and I took to Kenya. I see the joy in the kids’ faces when clean water is brought to their village, when they receive chickens whose eggs will provide a continual source of food, and when a young child is adopted into a new home!

It puts life in perspective – and we all need that at times.

There’s a Proverb that tells us, “He who helps the poor will never want.” I challenge you to see if that Proverb is true!

For years, I’ve worked with non-profit organizations that provide tour support for both major artists AND indie artists doing at least 25 gigs a year. These organizations are diverse — providing for orphans, adoptions, the AIDS issue, community development, micro-enterprise loans for businesses, livestock, clean water and so much more in third world countries.

It’s the ultimate win-win situation — helping the artists and helping the people the charities are serving.

The response from participating artists’ audiences has been extraordinary! Over a billion and a half dollars has been raised for the poor because of artists who have taken the time in their shows to provide some inspiration and make others aware of people’s situations around the world.

What about you? Would you like to help others around the world through what you do on the stage? There are many organizations looking for someone like you to partner with.

If you have questions about how it works, start with our Tour Support Q&A here…

And if you already partner with a charity, let us know in the comments below who it is that you have chosen to help. Has it been worth it?

  1. Hey Tom, thanks for this article and thanks for coming to Berklee last month, your workshop was both entertaining and informative. Reading this hit me right at home. You see, as a drummer and event producer I have made it one of my life commitments to seek ways in which to help support non-profit organizations and charities, by organizing things such as benefit concerts and etc…

Not only does it feel great to know you are helping impact someone’s life in a substancial way, but gives what I do more depth to it, almost like working towards something real, bigger than me, the “greater good” per say.

My latest project involves a partnership with a non-profit that deals with supporting survivors of human trafficking, more specifically sex-trafficking. We have this benefit concert coming up Dec 1st, and I am very excited about it, should be a blast!

Thanks again Tom, and keep on writing these blogs, I love to read them!
