Recordingtips 87: When hearing new music, try not to listen as a professional. Listen as you did when you were an amateur.

This tip has gotten a number of questions as to what I mean advising to try to “listen as an amateur.” A few years ago I was listening to a CD as I headed down an LA freeway to a session. Probably the only upside of battling LA traffic is that I’d often have 45 minutes or so to listen new music.

As I listened, my professional brain went at it. I was analyzing song structure, performances, arrangement, wondering who was playing and if I knew them. Of course I was also thinking of the sounds used, how it was recorded and mixed, etc. … Read More, Watch, Comment – Backstage Pass Required
