Just to Be Clear…

As most of you know, we’ve changed our website. Our intention is to bring you more content and to help you succeed in the music business! But I’ve had a few people tell me I haven’t been clear about what it is we are doing.

In the past, our website consisted of these 2 things only:

  • free blogs (teaching, insights, and concepts to help you with your show), and
  • a way to order our resources (DVDs, CDs, and workshops).

Overall, it seemed to be a good experience for all of us: you were reading and learning, and we could stay in touch with you. (And we still have the free blogs and our merch table, for those of you who were wondering!)

But in the years we’ve had this system in place, we’ve constantly been asked to fill in the cracks: “I’m stuck behind a keyboard, what do I do?” “I’m in a rock band and our lead singer doesn’t talk to the audience – help!” “You talk about creating moments, do you have any examples?” “Can you listen to my songs?” and on and on and on…

Well, as the saying goes, a picture is worth 1000 words. And sometimes I think the phrase should be updated to “a video is worth 10,000 words!”

Although we certainly plan on continuing to produce DVD products for sale, it’s not time or cost effective to put out a DVD to answer every question we get. Just as an example, our All Roads DVD series cost around $100,000 and took 1000’s of work hours to produce. I need to sell a boatload of those just to break even!

So we decided to spend our time, energy and money on something more cost effective AND more beneficial for you: the Backstage Pass! It’s a very affordable way to experience our concepts and teaching to apply to your own situation.

Backstage Videos

While most of you have said you appreciate the quality and content of the All Roads series (in a meal, it is the “main course” of our teaching), we also recognize the need for content without the bells and whistles.

So we started filming almost everywhere we go (New Music Seminar in NY and LA, Ottawa’s Big Money Shot, Canadian Music Week, our Nashville workshops and conferences, rehearsals with artists, interviews, etc.) – and these videos are added regularly to our Backstage Video area so you can learn, too!

Backstage Teaching Blogs

This doesn’t mean we’ll stop the teaching blogs! In fact, I and my three associate producers are looking forward to dialing in subjects that are of most interest to you. There are over 200 teaching blogs Backstage right now – that’s just a start!

Free Webinars and Conference Calls for Backstage Pass Holders

Another thing I’m really excited about is our webinars and conference calls to answer your questions – for you to get specific answers and information.

I’m planning one for the end of July: anyone who’s got a Backstage Pass can load one of their live videos up to YouTube, and we’ll pick 2 or 3 of them to evaluate, talk through, and help you with ideas on how to improve your show.

Watch for details Backstage soon on how to submit your video. Even if you don’t have a video to load (or if yours isn’t chosen this time), you’ll be able to learn from the experience, and ask questions about how to apply the concepts to your gig.

In the future I plan to have webinars featuring publishers who can listen to your music, songwriter gurus, marketing specialists, artist managers, publicity experts, and more – when you are Backstage, you can get expert advice from people I know and trust.

Backstage Deals and Discounts

Oh, and there are discounts on our products and services when you have a Backstage Pass. For example, our Bootcamp is regularly priced at $399. But between now and July 15, if you are a Backstage Pass member, you can register for only $150! In my mind, this is a no-brainer – this is just another way for you to learn crucial ingredients for your career.

To be honest, this is just the beginning! We want to get your feedback on what is most helpful to you Backstage.

I’ve heard it said a multitude of times, for us to learn something and really get it, we need to hear it 8-12 times. The Backstage Pass is the way to get that information in different settings, through different examples, and from different people.

In the years I’ve been doing this, I’ve heard a multitude of success stories when people “get it!” We want you to be part of that multitude.

Again, sorry if I wasn’t clear earlier – and if this isn’t clear now, let me know!

    Hey Jodi
    Good to be here
With all that Tom said I do have a question. Not sure of the best place to ask it. Changing guitars and moving chairs throughout a gig. Dead time? I have a 6 string, a 12 string and a little student classical I got when I was four that comes in for a song that is about the guitar and a bit of my family history, (So it is used once). The last one requires a guitar change, a mic added and a chair because it is the first intimate moment songs as Tom has shared so well about. The chair is perfect, the guitar is such a visual and I get comments about it all the time as they hear the song and see the very guitar. Very strong moment. But…the guitar changes and chair movement and other just guitar changes, is there a great way to handle this without messing up previous moments or making the audience stare at ya while, well, you get the point. Looking for wisdom!

  2. Do you have any examples of very small venues- houseconcerts and coffee houses? One person commented that in a room that small, being looked at by the singer is too personal.

  3. Tom,
You know that I have always been a huge supported of yours so I say this from the heart. I heard of all this “Back Stage” stuff and wonder what it was all about but didn’t take time to check more closely. Then I see an article that is extremely specific to my situation and click the link just to find some goon staring at me saying I need to buy a backstage pass ! Whoa !
I understand you want to get paid for what you do and I can’t blame you. I have bought most of your DVDs and attended a boot camp and intend on attending the Intensive workshop. But when I was used to clicking on a link getting the information need was great and I thought a kind of thank you for being supportive. I have mix feelings on this one. Part of me says “Free Enterprise, Tom needs to pay the Mortgage” and other half of me is saying “What is with this Nickel and Dime stuff Tom ? This is not your style”
    Emo

    • Emo, change always brings a time of uncertainty. I assure you there’s still free info on the site for you to learn from and enjoy! Each week there’s at least 1 new article in our Free Pass content!

What’s exciting about Backstage Pass is the new, never before seen video content. Rehearsal room videos bring artists into a process that would otherwise cost 100s of dollars in DVDS or 1000s of dollars in 1-on-1 Rehearsals.

We’ll have conference calls & webinars to reach out directly to more artists than we were able to reach with blogs alone.

Most importantly is the new access to Live Music Producers, giving artists the opportunity to ask specific questions about their show. Plus, you’ll join a community of artists Backstage to share ideas and thoughts!

These services & videos are actually worth more than the reduced price Backstage Pass we’re offering. But it’s just so exciting to reach artists on a brand new level – we want as many people to be involved as possible in our new community Backstage!
Hope to see you there soon!
