Kicked in the Rear with Love

Here we are again. I just finished meeting with a band that has sold over 6 million records, have had several Gold albums, and numerous #1 hits. They have one of the most charismatic front men around, who’s also a great singer!

I wasn’t sure what to expect. This group is actually known for their live show; and they want me to help make it even better. I was so impressed with their desire to learn, grow and improve.

In fact, I told the lead singer that one of my jobs is to “kick them in the rear with love.” To challenge them. Help them grow even more as artists, even though they’ve been doing this for at least 15 years.

He looked at me, gave me his fist, and said “Dude, that’s exactly what I want – I want to get better.”

What a breath of fresh air!

This group didn’t come to me on their own. It had been suggested to both them and their manager that we work with them for quite a while. Finally, they realized that the people telling them to get with us really cared about them – that it would be a good thing for them.

Do you know a band or an artist that needs help on their show? That doesn’t know about what we do here at Tom Jackson Productions? Could you send them a link to this blog/website and let them know the reason you’re doing this is because you like them a lot, and you want them to be a success?

You see, this band plays about 150 shows a year; and if it was about “learning as you go” they’d be the masters at it! In fact, they were on the #1 tour in America last year.

One of the things we discussed a lot during the meeting was the difference between good and great. They knew (whether writing a song, or in the studio, or in their live show) the right “little things” make a big difference.

This is a group whose merch sales are $7/person at their shows – and they still want help. They know they’re not connecting with EVERYONE in the audience, and they want to connect with EVERYONE. That’s why they’re hiring us.

You may not be playing to 10,000 people a night and making $70,000. But maybe you’re playing to 100. Are you getting $700 a night from your merch sales?

Here’s a group that long ago knew the importance of the live show, even though they were selling millions of records. Now that the music industry has changed, it’s become even more important to them.

Do you realize how important your live show is to your career?

I’m involved in several Army Band ensembles/groups. Heard you and saw you in action at Army Band Leader Training in Virginia Beach last month. I enjoyed your energy and drive. We learned alot from your seminar and your articles online. We don’t make much money, but we love to play music and are willing to try new ideas to make our groups relevant and entertaining. I’m an old guy, but making music keeps me young and going. Knowing how to make a performance work better makes the experience better for everyone. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

  2. Tom,
I was thinking of you yesterday when a friend of mine just got back from a Joe Cocker/Tom Petty show and told me was bored to tears by both performances.
I’ve been telling her about your videos and how I’m planning my new stage show, and she said she felt zero connection with those performers, although their bands were great and their songs are too.
I am so anxious to get my act rehearsed and out on the road now!
Thank you. I love your posts, too.

  3. Tom – you are awesome, I appreciate your authenticity. I have been singing most of my life and had no idea my children would follow in my footsteps. Just being in the Young Performers Bootcamp in Nashville taught me a lot as a performer/minister in music. My kids already see a difference in how I sing when ministering. Our church does too – they just don’t know what it is. I keep remembering your pointers and reminding myself of them. I have a lot more freedom now. Thanks for all you and your team do. I know our paths will cross again and the kids will see you at Camp Electric.

  4. Tom,

If you could add buttons on your blogs that we could share/repost with Twitter and Facebook, I would probably do that for just about every one of you guyz’s blog posts!

  5. Tom, a great post and story once again. I really enjoy your emails. Hope to cross paths again when you are in the Martitimes.
    Cheers
    Andy
