SXSW – It’s What I’ve Been Saying

All roads lead to the stage; I’ve been saying it for years. The live show is where the artist lives and breathes and has their being. It’s where your music happens, where your message gets out, where you make your money, and where you fulfill who you really are!

South by Southwest (SXSW) music conference calls themselves “the most important networking event in the music industry today.” (With nearly 12,000 in attendance and going strong for almost 25 years, it’s probably true.) So I was interested to read what The Vancouver Sun recently said about the conference:

“[SXSW is] seen as essential in most labels’ and artists’ career paths…SXSW isn’t the first event to attempt to do this, but its success lies in the focus being more on live performance than the biz…The most direct path to the money in music now is the proceeds from playing live.”

Loomis & the Lust

This week I’m working with a band from California, Loomis & the Lust. They’ve really caught on to the idea that they need to put more of their time, money, and energy into the part of their music career that means the most to them: their live show!

I met this band at the New Music Seminar in Los Angeles last month. They were the top prize winners at the event, winning the “Artist on the Verge” title. As part of their prize package, they received a free consultation with Tom Jackson Productions.

What I’m really excited about is that they weren’t content to just get a free consult – they decided to have me do several rehearsal days with them to get their show ready. We’re working on creating moments, a great set list, gaining confidence and authority onstage, where and how and why to move onstage…

It’s fun working with artists that get the importance of the live show.

Here’s a minute of yesterday’s rehearsal:

I REALLY hope it’s your band that we work with next! I’d love to see how we could rearrange your songs and create some moments for you to share with your audiences.

As the Vancouver Sun said, “The most direct path to the money in music now is the proceeds from playing live.” It’s what I’ve been saying.

  1. That is a really fun video!

  2. Jesus Martin says:

I am an older guy, though I don’t look and act my age. I left the music scene when I was 19 due to marriage and becoming a professional. I always wonder where I would be now if I had followed my heart. Now I am divorced, but I so badly love my music and am becoming more and more passionate about it with each passing day. I picked up a guitar and a lot of DVDs and have begun learning–I was a vocalist back in the day. I will be signing up for signing lessons and have reverted back to my old rockstar image of my yesteryears. I feel nothing can stop me, despite my age. Believe me when I say that I will be buying the DVD Tom offers to support live shows as I want my (our) live shows to be the best ever! I have an inescapable feeling that one day my band I put together will work with Tom personally. I am so excited that I am finally living my purpose! I love it!
